How much carbon will my soil store?
Many factors determine how much carbon will be stored in your soil, including climate, soil types, and many additional (micro) climate and vegetation factors. It makes a large difference how you manage your land and livestock. Soil carbon storage rates can range from less than 0.5 tCO2/acre/yr* for poor soils in dry climates to more than 6 tCO2/acre/yr for very healthy soils in favorable climate conditions under certain management practices. Highly degraded soils can even lose carbon on a year to year basis and not store any carbon at all.  SVX will determine the actual amount of carbon in your soil using our Soil Carbon Assessment and Measurement Protocol.

*  tCO2/acre/yr = metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per acre per year
how much can i earn by selling soil carbon storage?
We aim to sell the carbon you store in your soil as soon as possible after taking the first measurement and estimating the carbon storage potential.  However, the transaction is not completed until a carbon buyer is secured. You will be paid in the first month of the year following the year in which the transaction occurred.  If we do not find a buyer for your soil carbon storage within 24 months after listing it, you can withdraw without any further costs to you.

The price you will be paid per metric ton of carbon dioxide stored is stated in the contract you sign with SVX. The price per ton is determined annually based on the number of carbon buyers and market conditions.  SVX will withhold a fee of 20-30% from the carbon price, which is used to pay for soil carbon measurement and validation, to secure carbon storage buyers, and to run the SVX organization.  Various hypothetical example pricing scenarios are included in our brochure as examples only.  SVX does not guarantee any particular carbon price or level of earnings.
how much will it cost me to participate?
It does not cost anything to become a member of the SVX Sellers Club and to sell your soil carbon storage services through our transaction system.  Your only investment is some time to help the measurement contractor tour your ranch and take samples.

If you are interested in improving how you manage your land to increase soil health and grassland ecology, then there may be some initial costs. For example, you may decide to invest in additional watering points and flexible fencing. Many ranchers in our network have found these initial investments to be highly profitable.  As an SVX Sellers Club member, you will have access to many other ranchers and soil health and grazing consultants who can help you understand the financial aspects of different land management practices.
how do i join?
You sign up for the Soil Value Exchange Seller’s Club by signing the SVX Consignment Agreement.  This is a simple contract in which you agree to place your carbon storage on consignment to SVX so that we may seek a buyer for your carbon storage services.  We aim to keep contract terms simple and easy to understand.
